New Requirements

Old Requirements (For students in grades 11-12 during the 2010-2011 school year.)

Educating high school students at home involves more planning and record keeping than elementary grades. Daniel 1 Academy desires to help parents with this task. We maintain the student’s permanent academic record including an official transcript of subjects, grades and credits. Graduates can choose to participate in our yearly graduation ceremony. Graduates of D1A are accepted at colleges and universities but may be required to take the GED if they score below average on college entrance exams.

Requirements for graduating from D1A include earning the minimum number of high school credits and receiving a passing score on the achievement test at least once during the high school years.

Daniel 1 Adopting New Graduation Requirements

The state of Tennessee Dept of Education is changing their graduation standards for students entering 9th grade in the fall of 2009 and thereafter. This is part of a move across the country to require higher standards for a high school diploma with 34 states so far adopting new standards. After much deliberation by the board of directors of D1A, we decided to make similar changes to our requirements. However, we will continue to offer two paths of study: a college-prep path and a general-study path.

Our Reasons for Adopting the New Standards:

  • In the past homeschoolers have had a reputation for higher academic achievement than their public school counterparts. We want to see our students continue to earn that reputation.
  • The push for these higher standards, especially in math and science, is coming from the workplace as well as post-secondary educational institutes. We want our college-bound students to be able to compete successfully for scholarships and college acceptance and our work-force bound students to be able to compete for jobs against students from public schools who will have met those new standards.
  • The board believes that all of these new requirements will benefit our students in the changing world in which they will be living in the years following their graduation.
